Striving to be recognised for the high-quality studies and academic environment offered to its students, the University of Ioannina participates in numerous rankings that are carried out by prominent global academic organizations.

We seriously consider both the results and the remarks provided by these organizations to improve our performance, ultimately seeking to offer quality knowledge and a great academic environment to our students, researchers, academic and administrative staff.

The University of Ioannina is ranked second (2nd) among Greek universities, according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16, one of the world’s most influential university rankings.

The ranking encompassed 800 universities across 70 countries. Universities were measured on key areas of performance, such as teaching environment, research, international outlook and citations.

The University of Ioannina joins the top 1.000 universities in the world, occupying the 555th place (up 30 places from last year), according to the global university ranking published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). Furthermore, among Greece’s leading universities participating in the ranking, the University of Ioannina landed on the fourth place, its highest ever rank.

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) publishes the only global university ranking that measures the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

The methodology employed in the ranking is based on objective and robust indicators, such as the quality of education, the alumni employment, the quality of teaching, the number of publications and their influence, the number of citations, the broad academic impact (h-index) and the number of international patent filings.

The University of Ioannina occupies the 198th place among European universities and the 2nd top spot among Greek universities according to the CWTS Leiden Ranking.

These universities have been selected based on their number of Web of Science indexed publications. Indeed, the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering top the list among other academic departments of Greek universities.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2015 evaluates the degree of research intensity of the world’s top 750 universities and offers a sophisticated set of bibliometric indicators that provide statistics on the scientific impact of universities worldwide.

According to the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (also widely known NTU Ranking) of an overall of 4.ooo universities, released by the National Taiwan University, the University of Ioannina occupies the 490th place among the 924 world’s top universities.

This ranking system evaluates and ranks the scientific paper performance of each University, the scientific impact and influence of publications.

The University of Ioannina occupies the 526th place among 1.000 Universities spread across 57 countries, and the 4th place against other Greek universities.

The methodology employed in the ranking is based on indicators, such as global and regional research reputation, number of publications and  their academic impact, academic conferences organized, total citations, the percentage of total publications that are among the 10 percent most cited, international collaboration and number of doctoral degrees awarded per academic staff member.

UI GreenMetric World University Ranking (an initiative of Universitas Indonesia) encompasses 360 Universities from all over the world, evaluating them regarding their commitment and policies related to Green Campus and Sustainability. The University of Ioannina occupies the 131th place globally, while at the same time it tops the three Greek universities which took part in the survey.

The University of Ioannina participates in a new approach to international ranking of higher education institutions, launched by the European Commission. It compares the performances of universities in five broad dimensions of university activity: (1) research reputation, (2) teaching and learning quality, (3) international orientation, (4) knowledge transfer and (5) regional engagement.

The Department of Physics and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering took part in the U-Multirank 2014, while the Department of Medicine and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering participated in the 2015 ranking. In 2016, the Departments of History – Archaeology, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biological Applications and Technology participated, whereas in 2017 the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering, and Economics will join the survey.

The University of Ioannina occupies the 210th place among European universities and the 2nd top spot among Greek universities, just below the University of Crete, while the School of Medicine of the University of Ioannina tops the list of the Schools of Medicine of Greek universities, according to the ranking of the University of Leiden.
